This role is part of the UIT Student Labs team, which provides support of several Student Labs computer labs and print stations across campus. Student Labs User Support Associates (USAs) also work in the UIT Service Desk office, providing user support to faculty, staff, and students, along full-time User Services team members.

Academic Peer Partners are traditional MSU students who support LIFE Scholars with their academic classes and help them have a successful college experience!  Peer Partners attend class with a scholar and meet with them outside of class to assist with homework assignments.  The flexible time commitment is 2-10 hours/week for $17.00/hr. This role provides valuable personal and professional experience and Peer Partners join a group of fellow students creating an inclusive campus community that supports learning for everyone!

• Center for Biofilm Engineering: CBE Facilities Lab Assistant

The Center for Biofilm Engineering (CBE) is looking for a microscopy and microbiology research lab support.

The jobs duties will include:

• Weekly tasks including disinfect lab benches, sweep, mop and autoclave trash
• Monthly quality assurance tests of autoclaves
• Maintain accurate records
• Organize supplies and equipment
• Inventory and refill lab consumables
• Request chemical waste pickups
• Dependent on interest and ability, student may have the opportunity to assist with research projects and preparation of media and reagents

• Center for Biofilm Engineering: Gerlach Lab Undergraduate Researcher

The Gerlach Lab is looking for undergraduate researchers to assist with characterization and isolation of phototrophic microorganisms and their microbiome members from high pH/high alkalinity cultures.  

Job duties will include: 

• The isolation of bacterial microbiome members as well as the isolation of diatoms, green algae and cyanobacteria from high pH/high alkalinity cultures will be attempted to obtain axenic cultures.  
• Obtained isolates will be characterized using 16S and 18S (Eukaryotic) rRNA gene sequencing and microscopy.  
• Cultures of isolated phototrophs will be characterized with regards to changes in cell size, cell shape and growth rate in response to environmental stresses.  
• Obtained bacterial isolates will be used to elucidate their effect on the growth of their corresponding phototrophs. 
• Assist with lab chores
