Q. What is SmartyCats (SC) Tutoring?

SC is a peer tutoring program that offers a wide spectrum of academic support to MSU students across campus.

Q. What courses does SC offer support in?

SC offers support in hundreds of courses in many fields of study.  For example, there are tutors to guide students in accounting and business management information systems, biology, chemistry, engineering, foreign languages, math, music, physics, psychology, and more.

Q. How do students find a tutor for a specific course?

Upon logging in to SC’s technology platform with their MSU net id, students can search any given course they are currently enrolled in and book tutoring appointments, view drop-in sessions, exam reviews, or submit a request.  In sum, the web application allows students to connect to tutors, who are also students, who excelled in the course and can offer guidance.

Q. What are the different types of tutoring?

  • Appointment-based, individual 60-min. sessions;
  • Drop-in sessions; and
  • Review sessions.

Appointment-based Individual Tutoring.

Students must book individual appointments in advance. The cost is Two Dollars ($2.00) per session.  Students may invite friends from class to join if they wish.  Appointment-based tutoring gives the tutor a chance to review content prior to the session.  Appointments also guarantee uninterrupted help from the tutor as needed for 60 minutes.

Drop-in Sessions.

For same-day help, drop-in sessions are available on the second floor of the library, and free of charge.  This type of aid is best for last-minute specific questions and does not require an appointment.

Review Sessions.

SC offers exam reviews for challenging courses with high enrollment.

Q. How do I make an appointment?

Click Find Tutoring on our website, follow the prompts, select a course code and number, and press search.  After the first appointment, students can ask tutors to create custom appointments on a regular basis.

Q: Where is SC Tutoring?

Typically, appointments take place on the 2nd floor of the library or in the SUB, but tutors choose the location, and it appears in the Info button next to the appointment.  Drop-in is usually on the 2nd floor of Renne Library.  The Remind me button will show the location.

Q: How much does tutoring cost?

The rate for an individual tutoring appointment is$2.00 per hour. The total cost of a tutoring pass is $10.00 which is good for five (5) individual sessions.  Students must buy a pass which provides access to five sessions and never expires.  If this is a barrier, simply email smartycats@montana.edu or call 406-994-ROAR.

Q: How do I pay for tutoring?

If payment is needed, a link will appear when the appointment is booked.  Students can also click Pay for Tutoring on the SC website and follow the prompts to buy a tutoring pass.  Payment is not associated with student Cat Cards or student accounts.  A debit card or credit card is needed.

Q: What if there are no tutors for my course?

Students may request a tutor for any course if their search has zero results.

Q: What should I do if I have further questions?

Call 406-994-ROAR (7627) or email smartycats@montana.edu.
