Phase 2: Align Outcomes to Assignments
Outcome data is generated when outcomes are attached to a rubric and used during grading.
Attach a Rubric to an Assignment
- Open or create a graded activity (assignments, discussion, quiz)
- Click + Rubric at the bottom of an assignment or quiz and click +add rubric from 3 dots in a discussion


Rubric options:
3. Once the rubric is attached, click Find Outcome

4. Select the appropriate outcome(s) and choose whether to enable Use this criterion for scoring.

- When enabled, the outcome affects the assignment grade; when disabled, it is recorded for reporting only.

5. Click Import to add. Repeats steps as needed.
6. When you're done adding outcomes, review setting options below and then click Create Rubric

- Select I’ll write free-form comments when assessing students to enable a comment field within the rubric [1].
- To use the rubric for feedback only and not automatically calculate points, select Remove points from rubric [2].
- If you do not want outcome results to appear in the Learning Mastery Gradebook, select Don’t post Outcomes results to Learning Mastery Gradebook [3].
- To include rubric scores in the assignment’s final grade calculation, select Use this rubric for assignment grading [4].
- If you prefer to hide the overall rubric score from students while still displaying individual criterion ratings, select Hide score total for assessment results [5].
**Note: Some of these you CANNOT be adjusted after you start grading so make sure they are correct**
7. Canvas will give you a warning if the points in your rubric do not match the assignment

8. Ensure the assignment is published

⚠ Outcomes only generate data when assessed in SpeedGrader using a rubric attached to a graded assignment.
