Dear Students, Staff, and Faculty,

This summer has been like no other— but rest assured that your Department of Education team has been working very hard to prepare for the 2020-2021 school year. We are looking forward to welcoming everyone back in a few short weeks! We are flexible and adaptable, and ready to tackle any challenge that comes our way!

News and Announcements

  •  The fall 2020 schedule in MyInfo is not accurate. Changes were submitted on July 2 and the Registrar’s office is actively working on changes. Thank you for your patience!

  • Instructors: As you develop your Fall 2020 syllabi, please include the MSU approved syllabus language for COVID-19.
  • Personal Health Information- Please refrain from sharing your personal situation regarding your or your family’s health condition or discussing medical concerns with anyone in the department. Please contact Janet Simon, MSU ADA/Leave Coordinator, directly.
  • Our national accreditor, CAEP, issued a call for public comment on revisions to the Accreditation Policy Manual. Public comment is due September 15.
  • Make sure to check the MSU COVID-19 webpage frequently as university and system-wide updates are available all in one place.

Extra! Extra! Read all about it!

Congratulations to Amanda Obery, Rose Vallor, and Sarah Schmitt-Wilson on the publication of their article, “Data Driven Decision Making in Teacher Education: Perceptions of Pre-Service Teachers and Faculty Who Teach Them” published in Action in Teacher Educationand sponsored by the OPI GEMS Grant (Tricia Seifert, Principal Investigator). 

James Sletten, who passed away on July 23, 2019, was also an author. James was a devoted husband, loving father, emerging scholar, and wonderful colleague. He was a PhD student in the Adult and Higher Education program and had the goal to work in university student affairs. Apart from his academic endeavors, James enjoyed spending time with his family, running, hiking/backpacking, reading science fiction and fantasy fiction, and having intellectually stimulating discussions ranging from science, philosophy, politics, to the worlds of Star Wars and Game of Thrones. A beautiful soul with so much more to give and receive, James is deeply missed.

Professional Development & Engagement Opportunities

  • The Laura Bassi Scholarship, which awards a total of $8,000 annually, was established by Editing Press in 2018 with the aim of providing in-kind editorial assistance to postgraduates and early career faculty. All currently enrolled master’s and doctoral candidates are eligible to apply, as are faculty in the first five years of their employment. Application deadline: July 25, 2020.

Instructors: please consider adding the EHHD Diversity Statement to your syllabus. In EHHD, we are committed to this practice, one that can make students feel more welcome, more seen, and more understood.

Late Breaking News

The MSU Sci Tech Summit will be held virtually August 12-14, 2020. Registration is $100 and the conference theme is Full STEAM Ahead. I encourage you to register for this exciting and informative event. Graduate students and faculty advisors may consider registering for an independent study in conjunction with the content of this summit and deliverables that the advisor/student identify.
