Here are your Monday Minutes for the week of September 21-25, 2020.

Please make a point of reading this email every Monday (or Tuesday), as it highlights key department announcements, opportunities, and events, particularly events hosted by one of the Department of Education’s student clubs. It covers everything you need to know in a single email message.

From the Department Head

Dear Students, Faculty, and Staff,

Tomorrow (Tuesday, September 22) marks the first day of Fall and the Autumnal equinox. In the spirit of the Department of Education’s commitment to Montana Indian Education for All (IEFA), I encourage you to learn more about Indigenous Star Knowledge. This afternoon at 5pm, Ingenium—Canada’s Museums of Science and Innovations, is hosting a free symposium about the significance of the Autumnal equinox in Indigenous cultures. You can also visit Native Skywatchers to learn more about efforts to revitalize Indigenous astronomy, and the Montana Office of Public Instruction has a series of videos about Piikani (Blackfeet) astronomy.

As you look to the sky tomorrow evening, I encourage you to think about the many ways of knowing that our diverse backgrounds afford us and commit to learning something new about diversity in scientific understanding. Happy stargazing!

Take good care,

From the Advising Office

  • The Education Advising Center is currently offering a mix of in-person and remote advising options. We’re planning in smallincrements to allow us to adapt to changing conditions, so the following is our schedule through Friday, October 2:
    • In-Person Walk-In Hours: Monday - Friday, 9:30-11:30 am, in Reid 123 (down the hall from the Education Advising Center). Please note that we may continue to scale back in-person hours and prioritize availability for remote appointments as the semester continues. No walk-in hours on Tuesday, September 29.
    • Phone or Webex Appointments: M-F, 8:00 am – 5:00 pm, as available. You can schedule appointments at www.montana.edu/education/advising/calendars.html.
    • And, as always, you can contact us via email or phone. We’re available to respond during normal business hours (M-F, 8:00 am – 5:00 pm).
  • Students applying for student teaching (or looking ahead toward this process):
  • The Center for Bilingual and Multicultural Education in Reid 418 is open M-Th, 9am-3pm, for students, staff and faculty. The Center offers a safe and socially-distanced space for students to collaborate and receive support. See the attached flyer for scheduled CBME programming.
  • All Monday Minutes are archived and available for your reference.
  • Make sure to check the MSU COVID-19 webpage frequently as university and system-wide updates are available all in one place.

Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion Resources

  • Gallatin County’s Election Department needs election judges for the upcoming general election. The job of election judge is critical to our democracy, as voters depend on election judges to run polling places and counting centers on Election Day. As an election judge in Montana, you will help ensure the state’s elections remain secure, fair, accurate and accessible to all voters. Responsibilities include supervising the conduct inside polling places and helping Montanans cast their ballot both privately and independently.

Extra! Extra! Read all about it!
