Dear Students, Staff, and Faculty,
Today we celebrate Indigenous Peoples’ Day. Please take a moment to learn something new about the rich heritage of Indigenous people in Montana and beyond. Here are some resources for you to explore:
- Learn about Montana Tribes
- Learn about the Anzik Burial Site near Wilsall, Montana and Department of Education alum Dr. Shane Doyle speak about its significance
- Take a virtual visit to the Smithsonian Museum of the American Indian
- Listen to U.S. Poet Laureate Joy Harjo share her poems
- Keep up to date with current events by reading Indian Country Today
- Learn about settler colonialism
- Read an award-winning book for youth
- Learn about reconciliation
Let us take a moment to remember and celebrate that many Indigenous peoples, including the Apsáalooke (Crow), Niimiipuu (Nez Perce), Očhéthi Šakówiŋ (Lakota), Piikani (Blackfeet), Seliš (Salish), Shoshone, and Tsétsêhéstâhese (Northern Cheyenne), have traditional claims to the lands upon which Montana State University (MSU) physically sits.

- Please save the date for the Virtual TEP Induction Ceremony and Student Teacher Sendoff: Monday, November 9 at 6:15pm. Ms. Kristi Borge, 2021 Montana Teacher of the Year and Department of Education alum, will provide the keynote address.
- The Spring 2021 schedule is live but there are still some inaccuracies which we are working to resolve. We will send instructors requests for textbook information shortly.
- Any member of the MSU community concerned about another's well-being can submit a CARE Referral, which is a simple, non-emergency way to help connect a person with help they may need. Additional information about CARE Referrals is online at montana.edu/deanofstudents/care.

Professional Development & Engagement Opportunities
Dr. Marcie Reuer and Dr. Christine Stanton will host a Virtual Table Talk Thursday, October 15that 6:45pm on the documentary, Dodging Bullets: Stories of Survivors of Historical Trauma. Part of this documentary is set in Browning, Montana and some students and staff
from Browning Public Schools were contributors to the film. The film explores issues
such as cultural appropriation, epigenetics of trauma, residential schools, and policing
in Indian communities. It seamlessly weaves together past and present by presenting
a wide swath of perspectives. To watch the film on your own time, set up a free account

Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion Resources
- The award-winning documentary “Picture a Scientist” will be available to stream from Thursday, Oct. 22, to Wednesday, Oct. 28. The film chronicles the groundswell of women scientists who are changing the face of science in the United States and around the world. On Tuesday, Oct. 27, there will be a virtual panel event featuring keynote speaker Corrie Moreau, the Martha N. and John C. Moser professor of arthropod biosystematics and biodiversity at Cornell University, along with MSU women scientists. Our Science Math Resource Center is a co-sponsor. A Special Request from Field Placement & Licensure
Teacher Education Program instructors: As we head into the fall term, we have over 80 student teachers. This is a healthy
enrollment and we are looking forward to supporting each student during their semester.
I would like to ask you each to review the list of students, which is attached, and
encourage you to reach out to former students. During this time of uncertainty and
potential fear of what lies ahead, I believe they would appreciate hearing from a
friendly face. I think they would each appreciate the support and connection, perhaps
now more than ever.
