When is the best time to turn in my application?
We encourage applicants to apply as early as 8 months in advance of your preferred move in date; however, this is not a guarantee of housing. You do not have to meet eligibility to apply for housing, but you do have to meet eligibility to be assigned and to pick up keys.
Once my application is complete, am I guaranteed housing?
No, we have a waitlist for all applications. Applicants are prioritized based upon their application complete date. Applicants are notified of a housing assignment once their name is reached on the waitlist and a unit is available.
If I apply and I’m not assigned housing, what happens to the deposit?
If you are not assigned housing you can keep your application on the waitlist and change your expected arrival date for a future semester. Otherwise, you can fill out an application cancellation form for evaluation of a refund. Please see the current contract for a specific breakdown of timeline and amount.
Do I have to move out during summer or winter break?
No - as long as you are pre-registered as a full-time student, you can stay through the breaks.
I am no longer a student, but another household member is, can we continue to stay in University Student Apartments?
Yes, you will need to fill out a Contract Transfer Request. To complete this request:
- Log into the Housing Portal
- Click on "Forms" in the gold bar/hamburger menu
- Select "University Student Apartments" in the drop-down menu, then "Save & Continue"
- Select "Contract Transfer Request" and complete all steps in that request
Once you have submitted your request, our staff will be in touch if there is anything else our office needs or if this is approved and processed.
Viewing units can be done Monday through Friday before 4:00pm, but please call ahead of time to make sure units and staff are available. Not all styles of units are available at all times.
If I am checking in on the weekend, can I still get a key?
Of course! We have on-call staff that can assist 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. To contact them call 406-994-3730 or come to the office at 1502 W. Garfield and use the black phone attached to the wall to the left of the front door.
Only fish or preapproved service/assistive animals are allowed. Please contact our office at 406-994-2661 for information regarding the process.

- Students may not remove University furniture or store it outside of the unit.
- In Grant Chamberlain, Peter Koch Tower, and Nelson Story Tower, tenants may submit a one-time request to have all furniture removed. If approved, the tenant will be charged $250.00. University Student Housing staff will remove all furniture permanently.
Internet is provided by University ResNet services in all neighborhoods except the Westside Houses. Just use your NetID and password to log in! Westside house tenants can contact Charter, Spectrum, Dish, etc. to install internet services.
The use of personal routers in any unit, except the Westside Houses, is a violation of ResNet’s Acceptable Use Policy. Personal routers bog down the system and cause interference with the Wi-Fi that is in place. If you have internet or Wi-Fi trouble please contact the ResNet Office 406-994-1929.
Please refer to the Wall Hangings section of the Community Standards.
