Who can be Pre-Law?:

    • It's NOT a major - it's an advising track for student interested in law school

    • NO Required specific courses - critical thinking and writing skills are important!

    • *Guidance on Law School admissions

Myths:

    • No, you do not need to be a PolySci major
    • No, you don't have to spend your entire career in court (only 1-3% of cases go to court!)
    • No, law school doesn't have to be expensive

Sara offers:

When to refer?

    • Any time a student mentions interest - send 'em over to Sara!
    • Remember: GPA and LSATs are the biggest indicator to get into law school

MSU Stats:

    • 80-85% acceptance rate (nat'l avg is 69%)
    • UM, Gonzaga, Denver, Seattle, University of Oregon

Questions:

    • Staff allowed?  - Yes! Happy to meet with current staff and alumni
    • Helpful even if they don't practice? - some of the students who have dual degrees end up only pursuing ONE, not both - it might be helpful to take other specific courses that will help them in their career!

  • MSU Grad! Went to Med school at the Royal Vet College in Glasgow (way cool)
  • Practicing Vet in the area: equine, livestock, small animal, exotic, emergency medicine
  • Pre-Vet advisor on campus and also a professor in the MT VetMed Program

 

Pre-Vet Advising Services:

    • Jaime is an office of 1!
    • Mostly students interested in a doctorate of veterinary medicine
    • Some students who want to be vet techs or other animal health programs
    • Major, course, program selection advising, application prep, interview prep, second, third round apps
    • College of Ag advisor

Students:

    • All levels!
    • Students of other MUS programs
    • Most students have 10 years to apply after completing their vet pre-req coursework

Pre-Vet Club:

    • Largest student-run club in College of Ag (80-100 active members each semester)
    • Open to all students interested in animal health, veterinary technician and veterinary pathways
    • Volunteer with Spay/Neuter Montana
    • Not One More Vet Support (support for suicide in the profession)

Who are Pre-Vet Students?

    • Anyone! Don't need a specific major to apply and don't need a 4 year degree
    • Easier w/Chemistry, bio, physics, math, stats, genetics, biomed (the -ologies)
    • There's a pre-vet curriculum, but most students are microbiology pre-vet (declared)

Vet School Prep:

    • Must be juniors
    • At least 75% of vet school pre-reqs completed by the time they apply
    • 49 accredited programs worldwide -~00-150 students accepted out of 4k applicants
    • 3.70 GPA
    • 500-1k vet hours
    • Return on investment is lower for vets than physicians
    • Very susceptible to burnout and mental health crisis

MSU:

    • 69% acceptance rate in 24-25 (getting into vet school)
    • CoOp with WSU, LSU, Colorado, etc.
    • This year: 45 applicants!

Questions:

    • What happened to Utah? (WEMU) They broke off with their own vet school (4 year)
    • Are students required to come back to MT to practice?
      • For Med school - there are requirements
    • Is it less-likely for students who haven't' completed a 4 year degree to get into vet school?
      • Not necessarily!
    • Zoology/Marine Life - send them to Jamie!

  • Alumni Mentors offer 1-on-1 mentoring through the application process

Who uses HPRC?

    • ~1300 active students - all years, post-bacc, grads, alumni (no more than 3 years past graduation) , every college, any major
    • (more traditional majors like the -ologies) - but also! Ceramics, math, stats, psychology (non-STEM)

Careers:

    • Pretty much everything in medicine
    • Not nursing students - that's all in the College of Nursing
    • Associate Degrees: ultrasound, imaging, etc.

Programming and Student Support:

    • Exploration: advising, seminars/workshops, HMED courses, Pre-Health Clubs
    • Preparation: Professional skills, service experience, Clinical experience
    • Application: Prep2Apply process, workshops, mentoring, individualized plans, Mock interviews
    • The process takes about a year and a half - yikes!

Experiential Learning:Big on giving students authentic experiences

    • Osteopathic demo, WWAMI Pre-Med Summit in Missoula, Duke/MSU STAR, Suture Clinics, Sports Med Taping Clinic, HMED 340 Class, WWAMI Tours

Is it Helpful? - all of these pre-advising are elective, not required, so they work hard to talk-up their resources

    • On average, students who use HPRC resources have ~40-60% higher acceptance rate than those who don't

      • Medicine: 80%
      • Dentistry: 80%
      • PA: 75%
      • PT: 100%
      • OT: 100%
      • MSU Students are going everywhere across the US to Med School

    • ANY Major for ANY College can be Pre-Med
