The MSU Writing Center offers ongoing support to students working on graduate-level writing in the following ways:

One-on-one Appointments

One-on-one appointments with tutors are available online or face-to-face. You can schedule a 45 or 90 minute appointment here.

Interdisciplinary Graduate Writing Groups

A small group of graduate students who meet regularly to work on improving their own writing and give feedback to others. The goal of a writing group is to create a community of graduate students who engage intellectually with one another on drafts. Writing groups are supportive, collaborative, non-evaluative spaces. If you are interested in joining a writing group, please complete this registration form. You will be contacted by email to set up an initial group meeting.

Formatting Guidelines

Do you have questions about formatting your Electronic Thesis or Dissertation (ETD)? While Writing Center tutors are happy to try and help you work through formatting issues, you will be able to get more specific, definite answers from the Formatting Advisor (gradformatting@montana.edu) in the Graduate School. ETD templates, sample pages, video tutorials, and submission procedures can be found on the Graduate School's website.

HumaniTEAs Thursday

On Thursdays from 10:00-11:00 a.m., we host our HumaniTEAs ThursdayWriters’ Roundtable to support you as you progress through your composition and revision process. These meetings are for graduate students in English, American Studies, History, Architecture, Art, and Art History and are held in the Wilson Hall Writing Center (Wilson 1-114).

Focus Friday

“When we write for others, we engage in conversation with our readers. When we write with others, we work with colleagues toward a common product. And when we write among others, we create a community of writers.”
-Helen Sword, Air & Light & Time & Space: How Successful Academics Write.

Having a community of writers can provide accountability, motivation, and encouragement for the long process of thesis or dissertation work. To help grow these communities, the Writing Center in Wilson Hall (1-114) is open every Friday from 9 a.m. to noon for graduate students and faculty to write among others. Drop in at any point and stay as long as it feels productive. The coffee is free and there are snacks on the first Friday of the month. A Writing Center tutor is available to answer questions or provide feedback as needed.
