Frequently Asked Questions

The Associated Students of Montana State University (ASMSU) Fees are mandatory fees charged to students registered for seven (7) credits or more. Payment of the ASMSU Fees entitles the student to participation in ASMSU student government and use of day care facilities, legal aid, and other sponsored activities.

The fee provides funding for programs and services that are available to all students. It helps ensure student organizations, campus events, leadership opportunities, and student representation can continue to serve the campus community.

Student Government Fee funds are allocated through a student-led process and confirmed by the ASMSU Senate. Elected student representatives review funding requests and make recommendations based on established policies and budget priorities. All expenditures are subject to university financial policies and oversight.

ASMSU Fees are intended to support co-curricular and extracurricular programs rather than academic instruction. Academic departments and instructional costs are typically funded through tuition and other university resources.

Yes. Eligible registered student organizations may apply for funding through established ASMSU funding processes. Funding is intended to support activities and programs that benefit Montana State University students. The Funding used to support RSOs is the "Student Organization Fee" line item.

ASMSU publishes annual budgets, allocation reports, and funding information to promote transparency and accountability. Students are encouraged to attend meetings, review budget documents, and engage with student representatives.

Check out our ASMSU Business Office website for more information!

Absolutely. Students can share feedback with ASMSU representatives, attend public meetings, participate in elections, and serve on committees that help guide funding decisions and priorities.

Student Government Fees are generally non-refundable once assessed and collected as part of enrollment. Questions regarding fee assessments should be directed to the university's student accounts office.

Fee levels are established through university and student governance processes and may require approval through student referenda, university administration, or governing boards, depending on the type of fee and applicable policies.

Your fee helps create opportunities for involvement, leadership, student organization activities, campus traditions, advocacy efforts, and programs that contribute to a vibrant campus community. Even if you do not participate in every program, the fee supports services and opportunities available to all students.

Yes. While some ASMSU programs and services operate on a limited schedule during the summer, your student fees help support both year-round services and programs offered during the academic year.

Resources and services available to students during the summer may include:

  • Streamline and CatTracks transportation services
  • The Office of Sustainability
  • The Leadership Institute
  • ASMSU Legal Services
  • Off-Campus Student Life resources
  • KGLT Radio
  • Access to the ASMSU President and Vice President for student concerns and advocacy

Additionally, summer student fees help support the planning, staffing, and operation of programs, services, and opportunities available throughout the academic year, ensuring these resources remain available to students when classes are in session.

A portion of the student fees assessed each semester is allocated to ASMSU to support student government operations, student organization funding, student programming, advocacy efforts, and services that directly benefit students. See the Student Fee Breakdown chart above for current rates.

Students can get involved by running for office, serving on committees, attending meetings, joining student organizations, volunteering at events, or participating in campus initiatives sponsored by ASMSU.
