About the Grant
The Montana Rural Teacher Project (MRTP) was funded by the U.S. Department of Education, Teacher Quality Partnership program in 2019 and has funded 47 graduates from three cohorts. The MRTP was designed to support teacher candidates as they complete the Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) degree and transition into rural classrooms. MRTP participants were placed in an eligible rural school for their "Teaching Residency" during the MAT program, where they worked alongside a qualified teacher throughout an academic year. Once licensed, participants secured teaching positions in eligible schools and are given new teacher mentoring and support during their first two years of teaching. Graduates are also provided ongoing opportunities for virtual and in-person professional learning provided by statewide organizations.
The MAT degree is still active and accepting applications. The program has evolved over time in response to the Covid-19 Pandemic and to state need. Recently coursework has beenmodified to support classroom teachers on Class 5 provisional licenses. The MAT offers rolling applications and start dates for Spring, Summer, and Fall for all endorsements. Learn more about the Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) here.
