Monday Minutes
Undergraduate Edition
Here are your Monday Minutes for the week of August 10-14, 2020.
Today marks the start of move-in week, so I’ll say an early welcome back to everyone! You can expect weekly emails from here on out as the term gets underway.
From the Department Head
Dear Students, Faculty, and Staff,
I wish you all a warm welcome to the 2020-2021 academic year! My number one priority is your health and safety. Champ was busy welcoming students into the dorms, so this raccoon is here to welcome you back and remind you to wash your hands, wear your mask, social distance, and remember all campus hygiene protocols! When you come into Reid Hall, you will see clear signage with requirements. Have a wonderful pre-week!
Take good care,
Dr. Ann Ewbank
From the Advising Office
- With the start of term approaching, the Education Advising Center will offer a mix of in-person and remote advising options. We’re planning in two-week increments, so the following is our schedule through Friday, August 21
- In-Person Walk-In Hours: M-F, 9:30-11:30 am and 1:30-3:30 pm, Reid 123 (down the hall from the Education Advising Center). There will not be morning walk-in hours on Friday, August 14, due to the Education Department’s Fall Retreat.
- Phone or Webex Appointments: M-F, 8:00 am – 5:00 pm, as available. You can schedule appointments at www.montana.edu/education/advising/calendars.html.
- And, as always, you can contact us via email or phone. We’re available to respond during normal business hours (M-F, 8:00 am – 5:00 pm).
- Students registered for practicum and/or methods (EDM and EDP) courses: Please note that DegreeWorks has still not caught up to the course number changes made this fall to practicum and methods (EDM and EDP) courses. If you are registered for one of these courses, it may appear as an elective in DegreeWorks rather than satisfying the requirements for your major. Don’t worry, though—the registrar’s office is actively working to correct this problem, and the courses will count for your major and minor requirements.
- Spring 2021 Student Teaching Applications are due August 15. Please find the application link on the Field Placement & Licensure Office's website and contact them if you have questions.
- Visit https://www.montana.edu/health/coronavirus/planning/course-delivery.html to learn how to find out exactly how your fall courses will be offered (i.e., the difference between blended and online or synchronous and asynchronous).
- All Monday Minutes are archived and available for your reference.
- Make sure to check the MSU COVID-19 webpage frequently as university and system-wide updates are available all in one place.
Work/Volunteer Opportunities
- Online Elementary School Facilitator Wanted: Seeking someone to facilitate a "pod" of elementary school kids (3-4 families, approx. 8 children) working together on remote learning through the School District for the coming academic year. I expect the time commitment to be about 4 hours per day, but specific times will depend on the schedule of activities settled on by the district. Most kids should be in the 3rd-5th grade range. Tutor/Caregiver will be responsible for keeping kids on task and ensuring they complete required schoolwork. Curriculum will be provided by school district, but I'm sure the kids will have questions to be answered by you! Part of the goal is to minimize risk for medically vulnerable family members while keeping kids from being too isolated. Hence, we would expect you to commit to several precautionary measures with respect to COVID. Hourly rate $20-$30. Please reach out to Nicole Carnegie at nicole.carnegie@gmail.com if you are interested!
- Assistant Preschool and/or Assistant Elementary Teachers needed full or part-time for 2020-2021 School Year and possibly 2021 Summer Sessions. A person applying for this position must be at least 18 years of age, have a high school diploma and meet the requirements of the Montana child care licensing agencies. This person must have a warm and friendly personality, be sensitive to the feelings and needs of others and be able to relate well to young children. Individuals who have some education, training or experience with young children and MSU Early Childhood and Elementary Education students will be given a priority. In addition, s/he must be willing to fulfill his/her responsibilities in accordance with Yellowstone Montessori’s educational philosophy. Starting pay: $11-13 per hour depending on education and experience.
