Committee Duties
The IRB has the authority to approve, require changes to, or disapprove human subjects research in accordance with 45 CFR 46. To approve a study, the IRB ensures that risks are minimized, benefits outweigh risks, subjects are selected equitably, informed consent is appropriately obtained and documented, and privacy and confidentiality are protected. The IRB also applies additional safeguards for vulnerable populations and ensures research aligns with the ethical principles of the Belmont Report.
